CSIRO and EGAT cooperate on energy storage and hydrogen

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on energy storage technologies, batteries and clean hydrogen.
CSIRO Director of Energy Business, Dr Dietmar Tourbier, and EGAT Governor, Mr Boonyanit Wongrukmit, met in Melbourne on 4 August to discuss collaboration under the MoU on energy research, training and knowledge exchange activities.
Dr Tourbier said CSIRO and EGAT have many lessons to share as they lead the decarbonisation of the energy sector in Australia and Thailand.
“As Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO has been at the forefront of Australia’s energy transition to net-zero emissions, rapidly scaling up a diverse portfolio of low-emissions energy and storage technologies, and supporting the introduction of clean hydrogen,” Dr Tourbier said.
CSIRO conducts research and analysis on a range of new energy technologies to assist government and industry in catalysing Australia’s energy shift towards net zero emissions.
EGAT Governor, Mr Wongrukmit, said the collaboration with CSIRO will strengthen their energy storage and hydrogen expertise to provide a more flexible and reliable electricity grid.
“Thailand has made considerable progress in decarbonising its energy sector in recent years, however EGAT is keen to advance the use of energy storage and hydrogen – two areas in which CSIRO and Australia have vast expertise and experience.”
Representatives from EGAT were in Australia between 1 and 7 August to see how energy storage systems are being used by government and industry. The week-long visit involved meetings with Australian government energy agencies to discuss hydrogen policy, a visit to the Victorian Big Battery, and tour of CSIRO’s Clayton facility in Melbourne.
The MoU between CSIRO and EGAT is being supported by the Australian Government’s Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) initiative and the Australian Embassy, Bangkok, building on a 2022 battery energy storage system capacity building program with EGAT.
