Australia drives transport cooperation with Thailand

Australia and Thailand have signed an agreement to support the expansion of transport cooperation through Australia’s Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) program and Thailand’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). 

The agreement was signed by the Australian Ambassador to Thailand, Dr Angela Macdonald, and the Director-General of the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ms Ureerat Chareontoh, on 26 August at the TICA office in Bangkok.

Ambassador Macdonald said the transport cooperation agreement builds on Australia’s longstanding engagement with the Kingdom of Thailand. 

“As our two countries celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties, this new area of cooperation seeks to promote sustainable transport infrastructure in Thailand, and advances our 2020 Strategic Partnership commitments to deepen collaboration on alternative and renewable energy, and to promote quality, sustainable and transparent infrastructure development,” she said.

“Through P4I, the MOT will draw on Australia’s transport infrastructure expertise and experience to support Thailand’s strategic priorities and needs.” 

P4I is an Australian Government initiative partnering with Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries to drive sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth through quality infrastructure.  

With its office based in Bangkok, P4I will work with the MOT’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to deliver activities focused on Thailand’s transition to electric vehicles, implementation of free-flow tolling, and capacity building of MOT staff.  

The collaboration is aligned with ‘Thailand 4.0’, the country’s pathways to becoming a high-income country based on prosperity, security and sustainability.
