A memorandum of understanding between Australia and Indonesia’s state electricity company, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), has been signed during a virtual Earth Day event held on 22 April 2022.

The agreement outlines Partnerships for Infrastructure’s (P4I) cooperation with PLN to develop a climate change management study, and was signed by Yusuf Didi Setiarto, PLN’s Director of Human Capital Management, and Tim Stapleton, Minister-Counsellor (Economic) at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

PLN’s CEO, Darmawan Prasodjo, witnessed the signing and outlined the need for international cooperation on climate change during his opening remarks.

“We need to move forward. The only way to move forward is through collaboration. Collaboration of strategy, collaboration of policy, collaboration of investment, collaboration of innovation, collaboration amongst international communities. The climate change problem cannot be solved by us alone. We need to support each other,” he said.

The study will assist PLN in establishing an appropriate level of ambition for emissions reduction, as defined in their Climate Strategy, and supported by monitoring and reporting arrangements. It will also ensure that PLN is able to monitor and report its emissions effectively, and include capacity building to increase PLN staff’s understanding of climate-related risks.

PLN generates the majority of Indonesia’s electrical power, and manages electricity transmission and distribution. The company has pledged carbon neutrality by 2060, with Indonesia announcing a net zero goal for the same year, or sooner with international assistance.

The signing was part of a wider Earth Day webinar under the theme: "Invest in Our Planet: Green Ecosystem as an Investment in Future Earth." The half-day event featured a range of speakers on climate topics, including Gilles Pascual from EY, one of P4I’s delivery partners, who delivered a presentation on the global shift to electric vehicle usage.
