Energy roundtable facilitated between Laos and Australia

Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) has facilitated a virtual energy roundtable between Laos and Australia on sustainable energy development and integration.
Held 27 January 2022, the meeting brought together the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to exchange energy transition experiences and explore potential collaboration opportunities.
Opening remarks were delivered by Lao PDR’s Minister of Energy and Mines, H.E. Dr Daovong Phonekeo, and Australian Ambassador to Laos, H.E. Paul Kelly.
Presentations were then provided on both the Lao PDR and Australian energy sectors, including key priorities, challenges and opportunities.
Topics for discussion were tailored to the interests of MEM. AER representatives gave an overview of Australia's investment in grid infrastructure and regional connectivity, particularly upgrading domestic power grids. P4I delivery partner, EY, then discussed their support to Tasmania’s ‘Battery of the Nation’ initiative, which is expanding the state's hydropower system to deliver clean energy to Australia's national electricity market.
The rapid acceleration and integration of renewables is making Australia a leader in the global energy transition, with the AER considered a driving force behind national market reform. Building on this expertise, Australia is well placed to support the Laos Government with energy market design and improvement.
At the end of the meeting, P4I’s Executive Director, Elena Rose, expressed enthusiasm in working with the MEM through P4I to build on existing energy co-operation and to establish a longer-term partnership between Australia and Laos.
