Promoting Australia's energy expertise at ASEAN Energy Business Forum
Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) has coordinated the Australian Government’s co-sponsorship of the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) and arranged high-level government and industry energy experts as speakers.
Hosted by 2021 ASEAN Chair, Brunei Darussalam, the virtual forum was held from 14 to 16 September and explored ASEAN's energy security, access and transition, in the context of COVID-19 recovery. The event convened regional decision-makers shaping ASEAN’s energy future, including ASEAN energy ministers, senior representatives from energy sector bodies and the private sector.
P4I arranged Australia's sponsorship as 'Country Partner' and facilitated the participation of three Australian speakers in the forum to share their energy expertise and insights from the perspective of government and industry.
The first session of the event featured David Griffin, Sun Cable CEO, who participated in the Global CEOs Panel on Decarbonisation: ASEAN’s Energy Transition – Clean Energy, Oil & Gas Sector’s Evolving Role and Innovations. He outlined Sun Cable’s ASEAN Power Link project which will supply renewable electricity to Darwin and Singapore through a 5,000 km transmission system from the world's largest solar farm in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Dr Alan Finkel, Special Adviser to the Australian Government on Low Emissions Technology, delivered an address on Australia’s energy transition – modernising the national electricity market for an inclusive, low emissions future. Dr Finkel spoke of Australia’s commitment to driving down domestic emissions and supporting the region in being “at the forefront of the clean energy revolution.”

The final speaker was Dr Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council, who joined the panel discussion on Hydrogen in Global Decarbonisation: Championing Blue and Green Hydrogen Technologies. She explained the potential of hydrogen and the vital role it can play in a net zero future.
"So there’s lots of opportunity for Australia at the moment to be a leader in our region and to help other countries also move to net zero," she said.
"But we still need to get to scale. We still need to get those projects at a really good size. Because at the moment in Australia, our largest electrolyser, which makes the green hydrogen, is 1.25 megawatts, and we actually need to get up to 1 gigawatt scale."
