ASEAN Centre of Energy explores Pumped Hydro Energy Storage
ASEAN experts attend Pumped Hydro Energy Storage workshop co-organised by Australia, ANU, and ACE.
Australia, through Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I), and the Australian National University (ANU) is supporting the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and ASEAN Member States in exploring opportunities to leverage the potential of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES).
Electricity consumption in ASEAN is set to grow dramatically over the next few decades due to the region’s strong economic growth, rising living standards and electrification of products and services. The 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook 2020 – 2050 estimates that, under the Baseline Scenario, energy demand in the region is expected to triple by 2050 when compared to 2020 levels. PHES will be an important technology to enable increased renewable energy generation into electricity grids to meet growing energy needs in a low-cost and low-emission way.
This cooperation with ACE, which works to bring together and assist ASEAN Member States on energy priorities, builds on ANU research setting out the immense potential for the development of PHES in Southeast Asia. ANU’s Professor Blakers and his team facilitated a capacity building workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia on 19 and 20 March 2024, to showcase the opportunities PHES brings to renewable energy integration. The workshop also evaluated the technical potential and grid compatibility of PHES development and discussed PHES financing strategies.
The workshop will serve as a springboard for a research study on PHES potential in ASEAN that is intended to provide evidence on how PHES can support an orderly energy transition in the region. Upcoming research will serve to spread knowledge among key ASEAN stakeholders on the importance of PHES as a highly credible and cost-effective solution to balancing variable solar and wind energy generation assets.
The workshop brought together ASEAN Member States representatives of the ASEAN Renewable Energy Sub-Sector Network and Heads of ASEAN Power Utilities/Authorities, ACE, ANU, the ASEAN Secretariat, and select policymakers and practitioners interested in PHES opportunities.
The workshop was an additional, direct follow-up activity to a series of three previous PHES workshops targeted at Malaysian energy professionals which concluded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 2 March 2023.
